Does this sound familiar?

Signs your child may need this class

  • Scores unevenly across the components of the paper
  • Runs out of time before finishing Paper 2
  • Loses marks in open-ended comprehension despite understanding the text
  • Finds synthesis and transformation unreliable

The limiting factor in P6

By P6 most pupils know more than their marks suggest. What separates scripts is whether an answer is written in the form the mark scheme credits, and whether the paper gets finished. Both are teachable, and neither is about knowing more.

How we teach it

Each component is taught as a set of question types with a way in, then practised under timed conditions. Written work is marked with comments every week, which in a class of six is possible to do properly.

What the class covers

  • Comprehension — open-ended technique, inference and evidence
  • Synthesis and transformation
  • Cloze, grammar, editing and vocabulary
  • Situational writing for audience and purpose
  • Continuous writing — planning and structure
  • Timed paper practice and checking routines

What's included

  • Weekly live lesson with guided practice
  • Marked written work with specific comments
  • Timed practice under paper conditions
  • Make-up options if a lesson is missed

Questions parents ask

Is there enough time left in P6 to make a difference?

It depends when you start and what is going wrong. Technique gaps can move quickly; a broad vocabulary gap moves slowly. Tell us what you are seeing and we will give you an honest answer rather than an encouraging one.

Do you use past-year papers?

We use paper-format practice under timed conditions, because pacing is a real and separate skill. Practice alone is not the lesson, though — the marking and the correction are.

My child is already scoring well. Is this useful?

Sometimes not, and we will say so. Where it helps a coping P6 pupil is in the components where technique, rather than understanding, is capping the mark.

More general questions are answered on our FAQ page, and our reasoning for capping every class at six is set out in about us.
